In financial markets, no price move is purely random. Behind many sudden spikes and reversals lies a clever play on liquidity known as a liquidity sweep — a concept that, when masterfully understood, can make the difference between a regular trader and a professional one.

Simply put, a liquidity sweep occurs when price briefly crosses a key level (such as a former high or low) in order to trigger hidden orders located there. These orders are typically stop losses or pending orders placed by retail traders. Once those orders are activated, price often reverses direction because the primary intent of the sweep is to collect liquidity and set the stage for a larger move.
Markets need liquidity to move. Liquidity refers to the pool of buy and sell orders that allow large players — banks, institutions — to execute big trades. When those players want to enter a heavy position, they often drive price toward areas where many stop loss orders or pending entries cluster. By “sweeping” through that zone, they collect the liquidity (i.e., take out those stops), then reverse direction and ride their desired move.
To correctly identify a sweep, watch for three key signals:
When all three occur in unison, the probability of a real sweep is high.

Sometimes price just touches a level, triggers a few orders, and retreats quickly — that small move is called a liquidity grab. But when the market eats up a broader range of liquidity before reversing — i.e., fully sweeps the zone — that’s a true liquidity sweep. Sweeps tend to alter structure, whereas grabs have more transient effects.

Once you confirm a sweep, you can use it as a reliable reversal entry in the opposite direction. For example:
